A comic fan inside Magic Mirror ComicsWhen you think comics, you may feel nostalgic for the graphic novels of your youth like Batman, Superman or Spiderman, or maybe you think about superhero movies like Thor or The Avengers. But you may not realize the extent of the graphic novel and gaming world until you step into Magic Mirror Comics in Mill Creek Town Center.

Although Magic Mirror Comics carries DC and Marvel comics, they also support independent authors and host special nights each month for women and LGBTQ authors. Ladies night is the first Friday of every month, and Pride night is the last Friday of every month. Besides graphic novels, Magic Mirror also champions board and card games like Magic: The Gathering and Warhammer, and miniatures and collectibles.

Opened as The Comic Stop in Everett Mall in 2003, Heather McFarlane, who worked as a store manager, took over the business in 2017 and moved to Mill Creek Town Center. When it came time to move the store, McFarlane knew that Mill Creek was the right place to go.

“I lived in the neighborhood already and I knew that Mill Creek was welcoming,” says McFarlane. “Mill Creek is walkable and inviting, and the Mill Creek Town Center Business Association was warm and friendly to me as a business owner.”

McFarlane encourages that same welcoming and inclusive attitude in her store. When asked about the changes she has seen in the comic book business, McFarlane points to a greater focus and market share on independent titles and creator-owned content.

“Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman are still going strong, but there are also stories that haven’t been told before,” says McFarlane. “As an example, Black Panther is a strong title without the movie because it is interesting and diverse.”
